MCC High School Course Syllabus
1/2 Credit
Objectives:
This careers course is intended to guide an individual through the complex array of career choices. The use of standardized career testing analyzes an individual's interests, personality and abilities. During the course students will:
Ø Identify various career choices.
Ø Analyze their personality, interests, skills and abilities and show how they relate to a career choice.
Ø Examine the ways in which the individual's values, interests, abilities, and career choices are consistent with the test results.
Ø Locate career, college and employment information available at various websites.
Ø Analyze the job market projection in career areas of interest.
Ø Write a job resume.
Ø Participate in a job shadowing experience. Students will shadow one person for one day toward the end of the semester and do a written and oral report on the experience.
Ø Prepare a final project in portfolio form consisting of previously completed assignments.
Student Responsibilities:
Ø Complete all assignments
Ø Type or write in complete standard English sentences and adequately answer all of the questions posed in the lesson assignments.
Ø Provide the reasoning and relevance to the answers to the questions when giving personal examples.
Ø Be self-disciplined and manage time wisely in order to ensure success
Ø Always make guest speakers feel welcome. Be attentive, engage yourself in the presenters’ knowledge and life experiences and provide feedback/appropriate questions. Any sign of disrespect may result in the removal from class.
Ø Come to class prepared and be ready to begin class when the bell rings.
Ø Follow directions and ask questions when directions seem unclear.
Ø Respect the physical environment and take care of it.
Ø Students will be held financially responsible for all damages or vandalism to computers, books, desks, chairs, etc. Ex: Book replacement cost could be up to $100.00/book
Ø Use learning outcomes to set personal learning goals and demonstrate mastery.
Ø Engage in curriculum units and complete work on time.
Ø Provide feedback on timing and pacing. Let me know when things are going too fast or too slowly.
Ø Look for ways to relate the content to your own life.
Ø Actively make meaning by examining what you are learning, connecting ideas, asking clarifying questions, and problem solving.
Ø Let me know when you don’t get it. I am available by 7:30 before school, during AP, and after school.
Ø Observe, listen, take notes, and practice.
Ø Reflect, retry, and refine your performance
Ø Use feedback to improve your learning.
Ø Attend class every day.
Ø Take responsibility for finding out what you missed and complete make-up work in a timely manner when you have been or will be absent.
Ø Respect yourself as well as all students and staff.
Ø Be responsible for your own work. Do not copy someone else’s or provide yours. There is a very distinct difference between helping a classmate understand and letting them copy. Cheating will result in a zero for all parties involved.
Ø Write legibly.
Ø Participate in class discussions.
Ø Avoid any form of communication during tests and quizzes.
Ø Neatness counts and I do not make extra copies.
Ø Use class time wisely.
Ø Put your name on all your papers.
Ø Follow all MCC School Handbook guidelines.
Grading Scale:
95 -100 = A 83 - 86 = B 73 - 76 = C 63 - 66 = D
90 - 94 = A- 80 - 82 = B- 70 - 72 = C- 60 - 62 = D-
87 - 89 = B+ 77 - 79 = C+ 67 - 69 = D+ Below 60 = F
